“As you know...”

With the higher price of metals more customers are price conscious, but many jewelers have found Custom Designing to be still strong. Labor hasn’t really increased much but the gold and platinum used to make the ring, WOW!

Across the country jewelers are still repairing and making new jewelry but you might have found your closing ratio dropping because of metal prices.

There is a fix but you shouldn’t fret as much about custom as it has a terrific return on investment. So let’s examine the true profitability of custom and then a strategy to increase our closing ratio while keep making money without a huge discount.

I’m going to make a “David assumption”. The average sale from the showcase, without bridal is about $200-$350. With bridal added in some stores have an average sale of $850 to $1200 but let’s use another “David assumption.”

Brillianteering

The Gemological Institute of America will change the placement of “brillianteering” comments on its Diamond Grading Report and Diamond Dossier for round brilliant diamonds beginning on July 1, 2006.

Previously, when a diamond’s cut grade was influenced by “painting” or “digging out” the GIA placed a notation in the report’s comments section which read “Cut grade is based on the brillianteering of the half facets.” Beginning July 1 a similar diamond will have a statement notated under the proportions diagram, rather than the comments section, which reads “Cut grade affected by brillianteering.”

Brillianteering occurs after cross-working, when the star, upper and lower girdle facets are polished onto a diamond in its final stages of production. When a diamond is significantly “painted” or “dug out” it may influence the face-up appearance of the diamond.

GIA will provide a free re-issue service for three months to update any reports that have the original brillianteering comment.
