Pushing The Easy Button

TV viewers, at least in the U.S., are familiar with the clever "easy button" advertising campaign from Staples, the office supply store. The theme is that there's a complicated way of doing anything. And then there's an easy way. You push the easy button, and you automatically are doing it the easy way. And the easy button is a metaphor for Staples. Or something like that. The message resonates with all of us, because it's such a compelling fantasy. Whatever difficulty you encounter in life, you push the omnipresent easy button, and the problem goes away. What a concept! Sadly, in my experience, not all problems in life can be solved by walking into a Staples store, although certainly some can be. Regardless, I like the approach of looking at any problem with an easy-button mindset. "OK, this problem looks tough. But what's the easy-button way to solve it?"

Reactions mixed on U.S. Burmese ruby ban Reactions Mixed On U.S. Burmese Ruby Ban

Mumbai, India—The recent U.S. ban on rubies and jadeite from Myanmar (formerly Burma), including stones that were processed in third-party countries, will impact ruby exporters in Thailand, but the extent of the impact is debatable given the perilous state of the U.S. economy.

On Friday in the Thai Pavilion at the India International Jewellery Show, Somchai Phornchindarak, chief executive officer of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair and vice president of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association, said the U.S. ban on the importation of Burmese rubies is a "big problem."

Couture 2008 review: A study in contrasts Couture 2008 Review: A Study In Contrasts

Las Vegas - The high-end designers at the Couture show in Las Vegas offered a little something for everyone, with bold statement pieces such as head-turning hoops and large, all-metal cocktail rings sharing booth space with items of a decidedly more demure bent.

Vintage-inspired, invariably feminine designs were a favorite for Couture designers, proving that some of the most fashion-forward pieces may be those that keep an eye on the past.

Did You Know?

Did You Know? When Should You Increase Advertising Spend?

You may get a bigger payoff from increased spending on advertising if you wait until the economy begins to contract, says new research. That doesn't mean advertising in a healthy economy is a waste of money. But when advertising spending is already high, there's a risk of "overspending," says the study. Too much advertising may help rivals by increasing a buyer's awareness of a category and not your company's brand!

Conventional wisdom was right

To examine the long-term return from advertising, researchers analyzed the performance of nearly 2,700 companies — and grouped them by type (consumer, industrial and service). They then compared returns from advertising in recessions and upturns. They found advertising was an asset that contributed to a company's financial performance for up to three years. And increased spending during a recession produced greater benefits than increased spending when the economy was doing well.

# Today I am buying over 90% of my diamonds either directly on Polygon or from dealers I met via Polygon. Why? Because the economics lesson is true. Polygon really is the most efficient marketplace for buying diamonds. It has the greatest number of buyers and sellers in one place, and the prices are consistently lower. As they teach at the University, the laws of economics are very powerful. #
